Antique wood statue of Saint Vincent

Antique wood statue of Saint Vincent

$475.00

This antique wood statue of Saint Vincent - or San Vicente as he is called here in the Philippines - dates from the 1800s and last belonged to a woman named Manuela, who kept an altar full of old saints, crucifixes, icons, and rosaries, to which candles were lit every evening promptly at sundown, and of which ghastly stories of sacrifice and torture were told, mainly to the children of the house, and especially when they were misbehaving.

Manuela inherited the objects of her faith from her parents and grandparents, but she passed away a few years ago, and her altar had been sold off piece by piece by the children now grown up, who had no desire to keep the objects of their nightmares.

Old-objects hunter Enrico came upon this San Vicente just this year, and we, in turn, bartered the the object and the tale off him.

The Philippines is an archipelago of islands in southeast Asia that was a Spanish colony for three centuries, beginning the mid-1500s. During this time the heretofore largely animist isles were converted to the Catholic faith. Majority of citizens are practicing Catholics to this day.

Height of statue: 11 inches or 28 cm
The wings are of tin.
